Why or why not? Crime Scene 0- Trophy Madness Dr. Wilbur is a mad doctor and basketball coach whos team loses in a tournament. He hates losing. Tides Do Now 1. Think of a time you have seen or experienced something to do with tides and describe what happened. For example, did you build a sand castle on the beach, then watch it wash away a few hours later?

2. If you cant think of a time, make a list of what you What are Tides? This isnt it Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of gravitational forces

exerted by the Moon, Sun, and rotation of the Earth. https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPYeRJ yMOAE How Do Tides Work? T-W-P-S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ohDG7RqQ9I 1.

2. 3. 4. 5. What causes tides? What causes high tides? What causes low tides? What is a neap and spring tide?

What phases do neap tides occur? Spring tides? Why are tides important? Tidal Zone Foods Crabs, mussels, snails, seaweed and other edible sea life inhabit the tidal zone. Small tide pools may also contain small fish and sea vegetables. The sea life found in these regions are often harvested for food. Without the regular washing of the tides, these complex and abundant creatures would die and food resources would diminish.

Navigation Tides affect the depth and currents in and around coastal areas. Ships may need to navigate the waters during high tide in some areas or risk running aground Weather Tides and tidal currents affect the weather by stirring the ocean waters. The tides and tidal currents mix arctic water that cant absorb lots of sunlight with warmer topic water that does. The stirring produces more predictable and habitable climate

conditions and balances temperatures on the planet Tidal Energy Marching To The Beat of Tides I do- we do- you do Close read AS YOU READ:

tides. 4. How do animals rely on tides to live? Do Now High Tide-Low Tide wave (stadium) Do Now A _________ tide is when the moon, sun, and earth line up causing large differences between high and low tide.

Tides Notes TERMS TO KNOW Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined TIDE effects of gravitational forces exerted by the Moon, Sun, and rotation of the Earth.

HIGH TIDE The state of the tide when at its highest level (occurs twice a day) LOW TIDE The state of the tide when at its lowest level (occurs twice a day) TIDES OCCUR BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

The Moons gravitational attraction causes the water to bulge out in the direction of the moon The Suns gravitational attraction is constantly pulling on the water Earths Rotation + Moons Gravity + Moons Orbit+ Suns gravity = TIDES (changes in water level) TYPES OF TIDES SPRING TIDES Occurs during full and new moons

NEAP TIDES Occurs during quarter moons (1st and 3rd) 180 degree angle between Sun, Moon, and 90 degree angle between Sun, Moon, and Earth Earth Sun and Moon are pulling on the same

sides of Earth = more gravity = Most difference between high and low tides When the Sun and Moon are not aligned, the gravitational forces cancel each other out = Least difference between high and low tides Lab Tides Data analysis (T-P-S) how

to read the tidal data 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. At what time did the high tides occur on April 5, 2001? How high were the high tides on April 5?

At what time did the Moon rise on April 9, 2001? At what time did the second high tide occur on April 9, 2001? How much of the Moon was visible on April 8, 2001? Given this percentage, what phase was the Moon in on April 8? 6. How much of the Moon was visible on April 16, 2001? Given this percentage, what phase was the Moon in on April 16? 7. Where did the tides in Table 16.1 occur? Analyzing Tidal Data

1. Look through the tides data in order to answer the questions on page 251 of your lab. 2. Complete all parts of questions 2 and 3 in your ISN. (graph is on the graphing paper- pasted into your ISN) Follow TAILS for your graph. Title, axis, intervals, labels, scale Exit Ticket
