Speaker Notes: Welcome to the Introduction to the Eat Healthy Be Active Community Workshops, developed by HHSs Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion with review by the joint Dietary Guidance Review Committee, with USDA! (Note-we use the MyPlate extensively throughout the workshops! The series of six 1-hour workshops is based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. 3 Eat Healthy Be Active Community Workshops (2018) Speaker NotesThe updated and revised edition of the Eat Healthy Be Active Community Workshops (EHBA) was published in Spring of 2018 in English and in Spring of 2019 in Spanish. The purpose of the EHBA workshops is to implement the nutrition advice found in the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Each workshop promotes the principles of healthy eating and physical activity in the community. Note the USDAs MyPlate icon on the cover-- it designates the inclusion of MyPlate factsheets and the Dietary Guidelines (DGA) recommendations within each lesson. The icon is also readily recognizable for educators teaching MyPlate messages to the general population and is used with food assistance programs. The EHBA Community Workshops have been disseminated widely through State and local public health offices, through USDA Cooperative Extension, SNAP-Ed, WIC, and the Child and Adult Care Food Programs. Many SNAP-Ed programs around the nation are using the workshops as part of nutrition education classes for caregivers of ages 2 and older, including older adults. Each of these six, 1-hour workshops includes a lesson plan, learning objectives, talking points, hands-on activities, videos, and handouts.

Additionally, the website includes a best practices guide for educators, instructions for how to order print copies (English version only), a downloadable PDF of the appendix (English version only), and a Certificate of Completion PowerPoint slide that you can customize for your participants. The workshops are used by community educators, health promoters, dietitians/nutritionists, cooperative extension agents, and others to teach to adults in a wide variety of community settings. 5 Best Practices for Implementation Preparing for the Workshops o Be sure to thoroughly review the workshop concepts and lesson plan prior to teaching, and use the resources in the appendix for more information. o The workshops were designed to be used by a variety of community leaders and educators, even those without a nutrition degree. Choose the Time of the Workshop o Poll potential participants to determine the time of day that works best for them. Give Workshop Reminders o Consider creating an online calendar to notify participants of upcoming workshops. Offer Workshop Incentives o If you are able, offer participants an incentive to come to each workshop, or the entire series of six. Overall Timing and Answering Questions

o Each workshop was designed to be completed in approximately 60 minutes. For a larger group with many questions you may need more time. Speaker Notes: Best Practices for Implementation: Before being released, the Eat Healthy, Be Active Community Workshops were pilot tested at 10 sites across the country, including cooperative extension, worksite wellness programs, faith-based organizations, and parent groups. The workshops were designed using low-health literacy principles and were tested with participants of varying socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Key findings at the time (from pre- and post-workshop series evaluations): 64% changed behaviors, 36 % made no changes. However, out of the 64% that changed behaviors, 94% attributed their changes to the workshops. After teaching the workshops, pilot site instructors provided feedback on their experiences. These are some of the best practices they shared: PREPARING FOR THE WORKSHOPS Be sure to thoroughly review the workshop concepts and lesson plan prior to teaching, and use the resources in the appendix for more information. The workshops were designed to be used by a variety of community leaders and educators, even those without a nutrition degree. Choose the Time of the Workshop Poll potential participants to determine the time of day that works best for them. If you are holding the workshops at a worksite, ask the supervisor if participants can bring their lunch and hold the workshops during the lunch hour. Give Workshop Reminders (Gather emails/phone for text messages) Consider creating an online calendar to notify participants of upcoming workshops Offer Workshop Incentives If you are able, offer participants an incentive to come to each workshop, or the entire series of six. Provide items that help participants apply workshop concepts such as pedometers, reusable water bottles, or stretch bands for muscle strengthening activities. Or other items such as a recipe cards, a gift certificate to a grocery store, a kitchen tool, or a cookbook, possibly donated by workshop partners or sponsors. Overall Timing and Answering Questions Each workshop was designed to be completed in approximately 60 minutes, including time for a few questions and answers during or at the end of the workshop. If you are teaching a larger group with many questions, you may find you need more than 60 minutes to complete the workshop. 6

Scientific Foundation for Workshops Workshops are based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans The Dietary Guidelines provides recommendations for healthy eating for Americans ages 2 years and older 7 Speaker Notes: The 2 nd version of the EHBA is based on new language and recommendations from the federal nutrition policy document, the 2015- 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Dietary Guidelines (DGA) is a joint effort of both HHS and USDA and is mandated by Congress to be updated every 5 years to provide nutrition recommendations to the general public. The primary purpose of this policy document is to provide guidance for Americans in choosing a healthy diet and preventing diet-related chronic diseases. The Dietary Guidelines form the foundation for all nutrition advice issued across federal agencies, including food and nutrition programs such as USDAs National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Sample activities for ice-breakers and stretch break ideas for physical activity Online video vignettes 2-3 minutes to support the theme Handouts to support the topics are included as take-home reminders for participants. Each workshop includes a USDA MyPlate/MyWins tip sheet Evaluation Certificate of Completion 9 Workshop Evaluations 10 Speaker Notes: Each workshop ends with an Evaluation. Some instructors develop an overall pre- and post-workshops series evaluation, based on local goals for healthy behavior outcomes. Speaker Notes: Finally, there is a customizable Certificate of Completion. This is available online as a PowerPoint slide. Instructor can customize participant name, date of completion, and can add the logo of their choice to customize the certificate.

The certificate is a favorite incentive for participants to receive at the end of the EHBA workshop series. Workshops 1-3 Speaker Notes: All 6 workshops and provide quantitative learning objectives. All workshops promote the DGA consumer messages and the Physical Activity Guidelines (PAG) goal of 150 minutes (or 2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week, and feature sample stretch breaks. Some highlights from each workshop: Workshop 1: Enjoy Healthy Food Choices That Taste Great Includes: Healthy Can Be Tasty a 2-3 minute video vignette on YouTube. Features handouts: Tips for Healthier Choices, Cutting Down on Sodium (Lower the Salt, not the Taste), and How to Modify a Recipe (such as Lasagna). Workshop 2: Quick, Healthy Meals and Snacks Features a Shopping List guide, Tips for Eating out and Reading a Menu, and Slow Cooker Tips for quick and healthy meals. Workshop 3: Eating Healthy on a Budget Features a Weekly Planner, Calendar and Grocery Game Plan. Also, a List to plan ahead before you shop and get the most value for your money. One handout features Fruits and Vegetable Lower in Cost Year-Round. 13 Workshops 4-6 Speaker Notes: Workshop 4: Tips for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off This workshop helps participants learn about the Amount of Calories needed each day from the Daily Calorie Needs Charts, a Rethink Your Drink Matching Game, and features a Food Tracking form to keep track of foods consumed, to help manage calorie intake. Workshop 5: Making Healthy Eating Part of Your Lifestyle The workshop features handouts: How to Build a Healthy Eating Pattern, Shifting to Healthier Food & Beverage Choices, a MyPlate Daily Checklist, and information on Understanding and Using the Nutrition Facts Label.

Workshop 6: Physical Activity is Key to Living Well Emphasizes how all ages can meet physical activity goals. For Older Adults: there is a handout with examples of Aerobic and Muscle-Strengthening Exercises. The workshop should last 1 hour, including activities.
