Using Dialogue in Narrative Notes - WordPress.com

Using Dialogue in Narrative Notes We need to follow certain formatting rules when using dialogue so that the reader doesnt get confused: Use quotation marks (...) around the dialogue Start a new line each time a different character begins speaking Introduce or follow dialogue with a tag (e.g. said, replied, commented, remarked, added, agreed, declared, muttered, explained, shouted) along with the speakers name Include details that further explain why characters are saying what they say

Using Dialogue in Narrative Notes Cont. Punctuating Dialogue Examples: If a tag follows the dialogue, include a comma before your closing quotation mark: Hey, give me that, demanded Tom. If the tag is before the dialogue, put a comma before the opening quotation mark as a way to introduce the quote and then place a period inside the closing quotation mark if this is the end of the sentence: Tom demanded, Hey, give me that. If the dialogue has a question or exclamation mark and there isnt a tag at the

end, put the question or exclamation mark inside the closing quotation mark: Tom asked, Hey, would you give me that? OR Tom shouted, Hey, give me that! If the dialogue interrupts the sentence, use commas to offset the quotation marks: Tom said, Hey, give me that, even though Mary didnt have anything to give him. If the dialogue interrupts the sentence but includes a question, use a question mark and continue the sentence without capitalizing anything: Tom asked, Hey, would you give me that? even though Mary didnt have anything to give him.

Gee, I dont know if they will go with all the other food people are bringing. Well, they are in season Karen remarked. Okay. Lets get them replied Lisa. The two girls went to the checkout line.
